MERINDAH - Bunurong Bajerrang, Bunurong Ballerrt (Bunurong Women, Bunurong Strength)

Once upon a time, on the lands stretching from the Werribee River in the north-west to Wilson’s Promontory in the south-east, lived the Bunurong people. The Bunurong women, known for their strength, wisdom, and unwavering spirit, were the heartbeat of their community. They were not only mothers and sisters but also leaders, healers, and keepers of ancient knowledge.

Among these remarkable women was Merindah, whose name means "beautiful" in the Bunurong language. Merindah’s beauty was not just in her appearance but in her heart, her strength, and her connection to the land and her ancestors. Every morning, Merindah would rise with the sun, her spirit intertwined with the first light of dawn, a symbol of hope and renewal.
Merindah was taught by her grandmother, Yarramundi (Flowing Gently ‘Waterfall’), a revered elder in their community. Yarramundi had survived many hardships and witnessed the changing tides of their land. She instilled in Merindah the importance of their heritage, the sacred stories of their ancestors, and the need to protect their land and culture.

One day, a great challenge befell the Bunurong people. A severe drought threatened their water sources and food supplies. The men of the community were disheartened, unsure of how to provide for their families. It was in this moment of crisis that Merindah’s strength shone brightest.
Drawing on the wisdom of Yarramundi and the spirits of their ancestors, Merindah gathered the women of the community. They walked to the sacred waterholes, performing ancient rituals and singing songs that had been passed down through generations. Their voices, filled with hope and determination, echoed through the valleys and across the plains.

Days turned into weeks, and the skies remained clear. Yet, the women's faith never wavered. They continued their rituals, their connection to the land growing stronger with each passing day. One fateful morning, dark clouds began to gather on the horizon. The rains came, gentle at first, then pouring down with life-giving force. The waterholes filled, the plants revived, and the animals returned.

The men and children of the Bunurong community rejoiced, but they knew that it was the strength and resilience of their women that had brought them through the darkest days. Merindah and her sisters stood as living testaments to the power of faith, community, and the deep, unbreakable bond between the Bunurong people and their land.

Merindah’s story became a legend, a tale of strength and unity that was told around campfires for generations. Her legacy was a reminder that in the face of adversity, the spirit of the Bunurong women would always rise, carrying their people towards a brighter future.
