🎨 Opening Exhibition
Bunurong Baba – Torongo Bunurong Bik
Bunurong Mothers – The Heart of Bunurong Country
Created by Uncle Mark Brown, this powerful series of works honours the strength, wisdom and nurturing spirit of our Indigenous women — our Aunties and Elders, past, present and emerging.
These women are the heart of our communities, the carriers of language, culture, and Law.
They walk in two worlds — grounded in ancient knowledge, guiding our way through the challenges of today.
“These works honour the women who have carried us, who still carry us. Without them, there is no us.” – Uncle Mark Brown
“They Are the Fire”
For the Women of Bunurong Country
They are the fire that warms the young ones,
Woven into reeds by creek beds and moonlight.
Their hands, strong as stringybark,
Have fed, fought, and healed.
From the shell middens to the wetlands,
Their footprints speak louder than words.
Every path they walk carries the stories
Of grandmothers who sang to the stars.
They hold the Country in their breath—
Smoke rising from sacred leaf and ember,
Their voices like wind through Manna Gum,
Whispering truth into every silence.
They are law-keepers, water-givers,
Daughters of Bunjil’s sky,
Guardians of womb and word and wattle.
They bend, but never break.
To honour them is to honour the land—
Because they are the land,
Standing tall like Black Swans on still water,
Watching, knowing, remembering.
